Island Reservoirs

Capacity of Pipe Line.

Co st.

Time for Completion.

Extension Second Pipe.

If such an accident did occur it should not be

a very long operation to disconnect the two damaged one hundred and fifty feet sections and replace them by two

new composite pipes.

The reservoirs on the island, would, as a natural policv be kept as full as possible, so that an interrup-

tion of even two months, which I consider an outside

estimate of the time necessary for repairs, would not be

a serious matter.

The pipe line described would be capable of delivering 3 mill. gallons per day into Hong Kong to a height of 280 A. 0. D. which is the approx. top water level of the proposed Public Gardens Service Reservoir,

but could by means of a cross connection into the City mains, deliver considerably more. The approximate delivery capacity to the 180 A. 0. D. level is 44 million gallons

per day.

The original estimate for the cross harbour pipe Was $300,000 and I estimate that that figure is more than sufficient to carry out the proposed scheme allowing for all contingencies and spares for repair purposes.

I estimate that it would take about nine months from the date of approval to complete the works and bring the pipe into operation.

In the scheme which I have outlined above the

pipe has been kept comparatively small in size to facilitate handling. With the experience gained in laying the proposed 12" dia. pipe, however, I have no doubt that a second pipe of 15" dia. or possibly 18" dia. could be successfully laid at a smaller proportional cost, as the anchor blocks are designed to take two pipes
